Quote by shoujoboyMust... get out of rut... and write again... must... write... again

Quoth the most prolific reviewer on the staff. I think you're making the rest of us look bad ^.^'

Out of curiosity, why is it that you write (and submit) reviews? What are your motivations? What are your expectations? This question really isn't just directed towards shoujoboy, but really to any one of you still active enough to check the group page.

Quote by shoujoboy
Ah yes I meant to ask the opinion of the MT review crew. What is your preference when it comes to reviewing additional seasons or sequels? Is it best to review all seasons of a property (assuming they are direct sequels and not spinoffs) as one viewing experience in general, or is it best to break them down into seasons?

Technically either is acceptable but the choice of which largely depends on the style of the reviewer and the series being reviewed. I, for example, would not write an entirely new review for a specific season unless it is significantly different stylistically from the rest of the series in multiple respects (plot, art, sound, general presentation, etc. Otherwise, making addenda to the relevant sections of the relevant reviews and adjusting scores is more appropriate than writing a new review, of which much of the information is likely to be redundant.

The one drawback to editing a past review is that it does not get advertised on the front page as new reviews do, but advertising in your signature is a good way around this. You could also just write a new consolidated review and delete your now-obsolete past review. Just a thought.

f

I'm seriously going to tear my hair out the next time someone leaves the Sound section blank (and assigns an arbitrary, and usually high, score) in a manga review.

f

Out of curiosity, why was kawaiiguy booted from this group? He was one of the first members, and even though he's no longer active (which, I must say, has been the case for me as well), he certainly wrote quite a number of very good reviews. Even if he can't be properly added back to the member roster, perhaps he can be placed back on the staff roster with his former title of "Grammar Whore" in recognition of his past efforts.

That said, I just want to note that I am thinking of cooking up a review or two of some current series, e.g. Seirei no Morbito (once the category gets created).

Come to think of it, the only Nodame Cantabile review we have is Tama's excellent review of the drama series, so I think that I might also try to make time to whip up a review of the anime.

Funny how now, with the deadline for my graduate thesis bearing down upon me, I feel like writing just about anything but the thesis.

f

I just noticed that there's still a link to my website on this page even though I no longer have the WAR results posted on my site, so that link should probably be removed ^_^

f

Whoa. Activity, and quite a bit of it too! I'm so glad that there are those of you who are dedicated enough to step in and keep things going even after I've become inactive.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

P.S. For the record, my signature is two lines of text followed by one blank line and another line of text and it displays as such on my monitor, so it technically does follow the guidelines ^_^

Hm, do we kick out Shinsengumi too? Or should we allow our fellow italics to stay with us?

*sob* I've been disowned, and now I have no place to go!

f

By my inactivity, I have let this group die, and for that I sincerely apologize. Had this group continued to fluorish, it could perhaps have made Minitokyo a better place.

I leave this page with a parting gift, my magnum opus, a reference to a project that we once discussed but never saw through to fruition. For those who may find their way here in the future, please read it and give it some consideration.

Problems with Minitokyo and How to Address Them: A Discussion

f

At least some of you still stop by to update the board with your latest reviews, so I just wanted to plug shoujoboy's thread on whether or not reviews should be written for series that are ongoing (and therefore incomplete).

No more partial reviews

Quote by DREAMokay first off- i just "spoke" to Omni on Im. Omni is extremely busy and doesn't have time to come online. He is grateful and thankful for all the entrants & shinsengumi's hard work.

i shall further identify more Amano entries:

mail2 by SMILEBIT
amanoentry by MAKHAN
Moth by OMNI

so that leaves 2 walls left.. as art styles are like fingerprints i believe them to be. :nya:

Exodus22 by EPHEMERAL-GARDEN
mail-1 by HANAZAKI

also, im assuming OracleAngel didn't submit a wallpaper. The list has 10 submissions whereas only 9 were judged.

congrats to all wallers - that was a very difficult scan [complete-imo]. my personal favourite was cyd84's.. :pacman: :nya:

au revoir

Thanks much, DREAM. I've gone ahead and put up the names on the results page. Regarding the entrants, I'm pretty sure that omni noted that one person was disqualified right off the bat for using the wrong scan, so that would account for only nine entries amongst ten participants. Still, I'm curious as to what the tenth entry looks like.

f

And the final results are in.

With three judges and three participants reporting, the results are as follows:

Best Entry: mail
Outstanding Entry: amano-2
Honorable Mention: amano_ladyfan

Unfortunately, in regards to the majority of the entries, I do not know the identity of the submitter and as such I am unable to properly recognize all of the winners. As such, it would be nice for the participants to fess up (or at least submit their entries to the Minitokyo galleries) so that we can give kudos to whomever kudos are due.

Detailed score breakdowns and comments are available on http://minuial.net/arete/ . Final scores are out of a total of 100 and were calculated by 100(a/b)(2/3)+100(c/d)(1/3) where A, B, C, and D stand for total judges' scores, total possible judges scores, total participants' scores, and total possible participants' scores, respectively. Participants were not allowed to give themselves scores.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. That said, thanks to all for participating in Arete! Again, please go to http://minuial.net/arete/ to see the complete results.

f

Quote by Tama-NekoThat sounds good, Shinsengumi. I feel that if one of the judges handles the rescoring that there's not going to be any problems with stuffing the ballot box, so to speak. Do you want the participants to also send you our rating sheet? Or do you think that'll just get too complicated?

That would be great!

Given the people noted that they were going to start posting their walls this weekend, I'll take all scores that I get by Friday at midnight and then get the final results up.

f

I was also a judge. I e-mailed and PMed Omni my scores before the deadline. What we can do is have all of the judges sit down and compare notes, declare a winner, and then let everyone go ahead and post their wallpapers.

This is what I propose. The other judges can e-mail me their scores (eugene.b.chen at gmail dot com) and then I'll go ahead and post the winners and the comments, after which I'll PM or e-mail all of the participants to alert them regarding the results and to let them know that they can submit their entries. I'll also make all of the final scores available to the other judges for accountability to ensure that there was no shady scoring involved in the final numbers.

If that sounds good, then we should have results soon and be able to bring Arete to a close.

f

Quote by k1ruif i'm not wrong, the problem will be back when you have many people post there.... I think...

That's not actually the case. There are two reasons why userpages may get screwed up, and they both stem from how the quote tag is implemented in the guestbook. So, if someone manually quotes another post and messes up the quote tag syntax, e.g. forgetting to close the tag, it will result in a malformatted page.

The other time it messes up is if there are too many levels of system-generated (not manual) quotes. For example, if you write in my guestbook and I respond by clicking on the Quote in Guestbook link (and therefore quoting you) and then you do the same (and therefore quoting me quoting you), with so many nested quotes the system will start to insert malformed quote tags.

So, basically, don't quote someone quoting someone's quote and make sure you use the proper syntax if typing out the quote tag manually, and you shouldn't have any problems =D

f

Quote by smilebitindeed. how long is it that we must wait for any feedback from arete? it is as though no judges ever existed. oh well. cheers.

Judges are all slackers.

Seriously, if they haven't gotten back by now, they probably won't, and I think that participants and observers alike are interested in hearing the results and reading the comments. Then again, this might all be a big ploy to use suspense to keep us all excited!

Heh heh heh, exactly what we need to spice things up!

f

Teryon, I haven't seen the wallpaper that you're speaking of, but judging by what you said alone, you may want to post an official complaint in the complaint thread to appeal the quarantine; as part of the Elite Gallery implementation only wallpapers that are clearly craptacular are supposed to be deleted. Wallpapers that really catch the attention of the moderators will be placed in the Elite Gallery, but all other wallpapers are still alloted their space in the normal gallery.

f

All, I just want to let you know that as I've retired from the moderator staff, there currently isn't a Review moderator. Given that there aren't that many reviews that are submitted, all of the current moderators will chip in to take care of handful of review reports that are received every month or so.

f

*hobbles over to the Elite Member group to enjoy his retirement from the Moderator staff.*

Quote by cyd84Hey just wondering if anyone knew why the site was down for a day...doesn't seem to be any announcement in the forums

*grins* Hehe, if I knew, I would have told you guys already ;)

f

Quote by EternalParadoxThat's the second time I know of that shin's quoted the wrong person. First time he messed up a username, this time he's gotten a completely different member name.

Methinks it is high time for you to get a new monitor, buddy! :)

*blinks* *facepalms*

Clearly I'm getting old and senile now. Maybe I should just go find a nice place to retire to. . .

f

Quote by spystreakP.S. Can I make actual announcements threads?

You can certainly make threads about pertinent issues, but as you are a member, it's best for you to leave policy and moderation issues to members of the Minitokyo moderator staff.

f

Quote by SilentMasamuneI still wonder why I'm a moderator of this group if the majority of the moderators here are elites and moderators of MT.

You're still a moderator of this group, because regardless of how people may feel about you, in the past you did quite a lot in the forums to help the community. That a member does not have a colored or italicized title does not mean that they have not worked to improved it; there are quite a large number of members who are not Elite Members or Moderators who have poured sweat, blood, and tears into this community to bring it to where it is today, and you're certainly among them.

f

Two things; there's an update to Firefox that came out this week, so grab it while it's hot.

Secondly, looks like IE 7 beta 2 is out. It's still wonky on the standards end, and the look and feel makes it not only an inferior Firefox clone, but also without plugins. I'll stick with Firefox, thank you!
